Special Edition Lightbulb Magazine for LA Art Book Fair

on Thu, 01/31/2013 - 13:03

For the upcoming LA Art Book Fair presented by Printed Matter, East of Borneo, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Free Music Society, has produced a special edition anthology of Lightbulb, the LAFMS house organ published between 1977-1981. Conceived by LAFMS co-founder Chip Chapman as a follow on to the I.D. Art series produced by Joe Potts in 1975, Lightbulb was a magazine by and for the small group of readers who would contribute art, writing, graphics, poetry, items and a couple of dollars to help cover the cost of reproducing the items. The magazine format differed from issue to issue (see photos here) ranging from Pee-Chee folders purchased at dime stores to cardboard boxes containing cassettes. Some issues held color photocopies, a rarity for the 1970s.

The anthology, part of a series called "Second Life" curated by East of Borneo, contains a select group of pages chosen by Chip Chapman reproduced in black and white and color. Housed in a 9" x 12" x 1" kraft box with custom stencil and stamp stickers. For each copy of Lightbulb, the front elements will be arranged in different ways, making each piece unique. Included inside the box along with the 60 page piece are various stickers as well as frontispiece by Chip Chapman. The box is sealed with duct tape and will be produced in a limited edition. Pricing will be available soon.

To preview and purchase a copy of "Second Life: Lightbulb 1977-1981" visit the East of Borneo booth at the LA Art Book Fair previewing this evening, January 31, 2013.
Also available at the booth will be copies of the special 2012 edition of Lightbulb produced for the LAFMS 40 year overview exhibition at The Box last year. The complete list of contributors is available here.
