LAFMS on the cover of the LA Times!

on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 14:56

The Tuesday, January 31 edition of the LA Times Calendar section featured a photo of the Pyramid Headphones installation at the Welcome Inn Time Machine produced by SASSAS for the closing of the Performance and Public Art Festival of Pacific Standard Time.

Here is a scan of the newspaper (provided by Dennis Duck).  You can see Joe Potts on the right speaking with a visitor.

According to Potts, the twelve extant headphones have not been used in the public since their original use in 1976 as part of the Brand Library performance.  Prerecorded sounds supplied by Le Forte Four were piped into the homemade cardboard headphones.

LAFMS weekend 1/28 and 1/29 in LA and Eagle Rock

on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 01:20

On Saturday, Jan. 28, from 12pm-7pm at The Box in the arts district of downtown LA, a day of performances will take place in support of "Beneath The Valley of The Lowest Form of Music: The Los Angeles Free Music Society '1972-2012'".  Scheduled to perform: Airway, Artificial Art Ensemble, Doo-Dooettes, Le Forte Four, The Tenses (actual order not yet determined).

Then on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 4pm-10pm there will be a recreation of the infamous Pyramid Headphone concert of 1976 as part of Welcome Inn Time Machine:

"The Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS), the banner heading of a loose collective of experimental musicians founded in the early 1970s, have had immeasurable influence on the spread and evolution of noise and avant-garde music and DIY culture over the past almost 40 years. In July of 1976, Le Forte Four, one of the earliest groups in the collective, created an installation at the Brand Library Art Center in Glendale, California, which consisted of forty-four black, pyramid-shaped, stereo headphones, with lights on the top, through which were played an audio collage entitled Box Your Ears (which was released in 1976 as part of the double LP LAFMS: Live at the Brand). This installation recreates the original utilizing the twelve extant original pyramid headphones.

The LAFMS Shoe... Fri., Jan. 20 at the Getty - tickets available again!

on Wed, 01/11/2012 - 03:25

Though the event is official "sold out", a limited amount of free tickets may again be reserved beginning Tuesday, January 17 to see The LAFMS Shoe perform at the Getty Center as part of the kick off of its performance festival on Friday, January 20, 2012.

Kalpa, by Hirokazu Kosaka: This major new site-specific commission by Hirokazu Kosaka will transform the Getty Center’s Arrival Plaza into a sculptural and performative installation. In Sanskrit, kalpa means eon—a long period of time. Once every hundred years, an angel comes down from heaven and swipes the surface of a stone with her silk sleeves until the rock disappears. Kosaka builds a symbolic parallel between kalpa and the inevitable passage of time that slowly transforms our lives, our histories, and our memories.

Following the performance, the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) will present the LAFMS Shoe, a series of duets that seamlessly morph from musician to musician exposing a constantly evolving palette of musical voices.  The LAFMS Shoe is comprised of many of the core members of LAFMS including Ace Farren Ford, Dennis Duck, Fredrik Nilsen, Joe Potts, Joseph Hammer, Rick Potts, Tom Recchion, and Vetza.

Visit for more information and to make reservations beginning Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
